It may happen that a Wagon provider uses a stateless transport which does not authenticate with connect() or during specific operations the Wagon provider must authenticate where other operations might be anonymous.

Closing as Won't Fix for the 3.x line. Adding checked AuthenticationException to existing methods on the Wagon interface is a breaking change for all downstream providers and implementations across the ecosystem. In Maven 4+, network transports are handled by Maven Resolver.
