Electronic waste, or e-waste, refers to discarded electronic devices and electrical equipment. This
category includes everything from old smartphones and laptops to refrigerators and televisions.
E-waste poses a significant environmental and health hazard when not managed responsibly.

GROWING E-WASTE PROBLEM

With the rapid advancement of technology, the lifespan of electronic devices has shortened
considerably. As a result, the amount of e-waste generated worldwide has skyrocketed.
Unfortunately, much of this waste ends up in landfills or is improperly disposed of, leading to
pollution, resource depletion, and health risks.

cadmium, and brominated flame retardants. When e-waste is not disposed of properly, these
chemicals can leach into the soil and water, leading to soil contamination and water pollution.

b) Air Pollution: Burning or incinerating e-waste releases harmful toxins and pollutants into
the air, contributing to air pollution and posing a risk to respiratory health.

hazardous substances. This contamination can affect the growth of plants and can potentially
enter the food chain, posing health risks to humans and wildlife.

b) Water Pollution: When e-waste is dumped in landfills or disposed of inappropriately,
rainwater
can wash toxins from the waste into rivers, lakes, and groundwater, leading to water pollution.
This can harm aquatic life and make water sources unsafe for consumptiont here.

also considerably affect the nervous and reproductive systems of the human body, leading to

environment, which is why it is so important to spread awareness on this growing problem and the

Impacts of E-Waste on Health

Recycling of valuable elements contained in e-waste has become a source of income mostly in the
informal sector of developing or emerging industrialized countries. However, primitive recycling
techniques such as burning cables for retaining the inherent copper expose both adult and child
workers as well as their families to a range of hazardous substances.

Where Does Your Electronic Waste Go?

All electronic waste is made up of deadly chemicals such as lead, cadmium, beryllium, mercury and
brominated flame retardants. Disposing of gadgets and devices improperly increases the chances
of these dangerous chemicals contaminating the soil, polluting the air and leaching into water
bodies which then harms human health and the environment.
