Is this something new, I was on version 22.2 using with Rider using Claude Code Pro, and today it just stopped and I cant log in with Claude pro, it is asking for developer account.

When first tried this was probably a month ago, I have installed Claude Agent from ACP registry and then I have installed Claude Code Plugin in Rider which prompted me to install Claude Code CLI which I did and then I have authenticated with my account and it worked great. Yesterday it asked me to reauthenticate and when I tried did not work I was getting an error to update and then I updated to latest version for Claude Agent from ACP registry and after that Ive been getting this that it does not supports claude.ai subscriptions.

I am having the same problem in all Jetbrains products, but at the same time it works fine in Zed at the same machine. My version is 0.25.3

@thedcollins @shokurov unfortunately JetBrains is not allowed to distribute Claude Code version that's logging in via Claude subscription. I'm really sorry, but it goes against Anthropic's user agreement

Somehow my understanding was that ACP does not violate Anthropic's user agreement and that the same technology is used by both Jetbrains and Zed. If that's so, I am really curious why Claude ACP works in Zed, but not in Jetbrains. Just to be clear, I am referring to ACP, not to the earlier Jetbrans Claude agent.

Also, by saying "JetBrains is not allowed to distribute Claude Code version", do you mean that the claude executable should not be installed through Jetbrains? And if I already had it installed via CLI that's not violation? I am sure I have it installed long while ago, before Jetbrains and Zed adopted ACP approach..

To make Claude work via ACP you're actually installing a claude-acp package, that's in fact a wrapper around Claude CLI. So you can't just connect existing Claude CLI via ACP

But this means that the whole ACP approach is a violation of Anthropic's user agreement? That would be a real bummer

@shokurov no, it's not — you're allowed to use claude however you want, just not with Claude subscription plan. If you just pay for model API usage — no license is violated

@anna239 I'm very confused by this wording. I'm not a Jetbrains user myself, I use Zed, but I'm using it via a Claude subscription, and it works just fine, always has. Does that mean I'm violating the ToS and could be banned? #337 asked exactly about that, but no response was given by any of the officials maintaining this project.

cc @benbrandt - Please clarify where this project stands regarding Claude usage with ACP via their subscription.

this whole thing is a big cluster... and i mostly blame jetbrains and anthropic for this. these are my findings and what has been working for me. this was discussed in another bug but i can't find it right now.

1. the agent that gets installed from the registry did work with the cli at one point, but doesn't anymore.
2. jetbrains doesn't set a custom claude config dir, so if i was working in the cli and then switched to jetbrains, jetbrains would clobber my cli login. i worked around this by using cloak so i can use custom config dirs for my cli subscriptions (work and personal) and jetbrains continues to use the "default" ${HOME}/.claude.
3. i added my personal/work subscriptions as custom acp agents (i will paste below). this appeared to be doing the correct thing initially but then i discovered the sessions were using my jetbrains tokens instead of my claude tokens.
4. i then added a CLAUDE_CODE_OAUTH_TOKEN (obtained from the cli) to the custom acp settings but that still didn't resolve the issue.
5. someone said (in the bug i can't find) that the llm.chat.agent.acp.explicit.auth.enabled setting (tap shift twice which opens a search box, and type Reg and select Registry and you can find it there) needs to be disabled.

i did that and my custom acp agents now work as expected but the jetbrains agent installed from the registry does not. it just enters some kind of authentication loop. there is this issue that claims something may have been fixed but i haven't had the time to investigate.

@jgangemi thank you for the idea of using custom ACP, that worked (though there was no llm.chat.agent.acp.explicit.auth.enabled in my registry, so I skipped that part).

Generated a token with claude setup-token, put it into the config and voila.

@anna239 I think there is still a lot of confusion on how Jetbrains deals with Anthropic's authentication. Everyone would win from a clear statement of the current legal status. Especially given that Zed is somehow making it work for their users.

@shokurov double check to make sure that your custom agents are actually using the token and not the jetbrains subscription. i think the only way to do that is send some prompts and check your jetbrains quota to see if it decreased. i'm still skeptical that this works properly w/o that setting disabled.

Are you using the subscription and not Claude tokens with this? Where does this have to be edited?

Side question.

Is it true that Claude might suspend the account of people doing this or not? It seems from their policies they don't allow users to use third party tools anymore. Just curious about the potential risk.
