Proposal to enhance Open Science supplement #160

Description

@davisjam

At the ICSE'26 PC meeting at ICSE'25, the ICSE'26 PC chairs indicated interest in better guidance for artifacts submitted to ICSE'26. I undertook to seek such guidance.

I thought the Empirical Standards would be a good source of truth. Indeed the standard on Open Science is a great resource.

I propose several enhancements to the current open science supplement.

  1. Add additional reading to the artifact track experiences from the systems and security research communities (http://sysartifacts.github.io, http://secartifacts.github.io), including some of the tutorials on how to make an artifact.
  2. Add Exemplars -- links to "Distinguished Artifact" award winners and other good artifacts for the various types of research covered by the Empirical Standards. (I think such links are better placed within the Open Science supplement than within each of the standards)
  3. Add links to two research papers about artifact'ing within SE research
  4. Articulate the purpose of Open Science, grounded in the ACM Artifacts document. The current supplement is quite brief on the purpose and implications of open science.

I welcome feedback and pushback. If this would be of interest, I'd be happy to propose a PR.

Related: #26 requested Artifacts standards, which I believe have evolved into the "Open Science" supplement.
