[Feature Request]: Persist device settings across page refreshes

Hi,

We’d like to suggest an improvement to how device settings are handled between the waiting room and the meeting room.

Current behavior

• In the waiting room, the user disables mic and video.

• Upon joining the meeting room, mic and video remain disabled.

• After refreshing the page, the user rejoins the meeting room with mic and video enabled.

Suggested behavior

• In the waiting room, the user disables mic and video.

• Upon joining the meeting room, mic and video remain disabled.

• After refreshing the page, the user rejoins the meeting room with mic and video still disabled.

We believe implementing some kind of session or persistence mechanism for user preferences would make the experience more consistent.

We’d love to hear your thoughts on this topic, and we’d be happy to provide a MR to address it.

I’m considering storing the selected mic and camera (by device ID) in localStorage during the waiting room.
When the waitingRoomPage first renders, I reset those stored items.
Then, upon entering the meeting room:

• I initialize the publisher using the stored devices, or
• disable the device if there’s no entry in storage, or if the stored value is set to "disabled".

Does this approach sound correct to you, or would you suggest another solution?

Those are excellent suggestions. That makes sense to me.

To be clear, when you say reset, do you mean to set the mic and camera to the default devices (effectively clearing the saved preferences)? Or do you mean to re-set the mic and camera to the saved preferences when you re-enter a waiting room?

Then, upon entering the meeting room:

• disable the device if there’s no entry in storage, or if the stored value is set to "disabled".

For this one, could we disable the device only if the stored value is disabled or similar? Also, we plan on having the devices enabled/disabled as configurable in a future version 🤞
