It should be possible to find all historical information such as old device names and old sw versions for a device. Device History does not provide this today.

Adding some notes here:

  • You can definitely search device information based on serial numbers in the device history tool. Just enter a serial number in the search field.
    • However, I don't think the search supports looking for serial numbers that aren't associated with a current IP device or module.

Finding old device names and software version of devices is already supported, but this is not a feature of the device history tool itself: As long as these events have been registered in a device's history, they will show in the device history tool. However, complete event registration of software changes and device lifecycles have only been recently added to NAV, so it will always be impossible to look up software and name changes back further in time than that feature addition.

Added the discussion label to clarify my suspicion: This isn't about active devices, but about devices "on the shelf". Serial numbers of active devices should already be searchable.

It seems this particular issue is probably just about the inability to search for serial numbers that are inactive ("on-the-shelf"). In which case, this should be a very simple fix.

However, the search component as it stands today is not very useful for this kind of search (it only searches data included in the form). The changes being made in #2883 may be relevant to also apply to device history before this can be fixed meaningfully.
