create_plot -> [...] highlight_labels -> does not accept raw strings ? how can i use matpotlib LaTeX for label rendering

i need to bold only part of each label, not the whole text. it seems that when i use r'\textbf{Bold Text} followed by some other text' , this is not recognized and not applied. Is there documentation on how to do this? or is it even possible?

I think that may not actually be possible with the current setup unfortunately. In principle you can take the figure returned and process the individual text artists individually and update them, but I don't think there's a way to get partial label text bolding pushed through the current API that is exposed in datamapplot. Sorry.
