used a different approach: moved already existing logic that handled dir and kraken validation into a helper function called resolve_fastqs. We also now initialize fqs as empty as a placeholder, so that when we're running test it won't actually matter what it is, and once we are not running test, resolve_fastqs will set FQ1 and FQ2 to the actual paths.
