Building the TopoToolbox package on Windows requires the "Developer Command Prompt for VS 2022". This part of the documentation explains the build process. After building, the package should be usable in the Python version you build it in.

Tried doing using ninja, i.e. set CMAKE_GENERATOR=ninja, but gave me an error message. Also, I tried cloning and downloading the library too, but didn't work, please refer to the snapshot.

It looks like you cloned the wschwanghart/topotoolbox repository, which is the older MATLAB version of TopoToolbox, so pip install from that directory shouldn't do anything.

Can you post the error message you got when running pip install from the pytopotoolbox directory with CMAKE_GENERATOR=ninja? Have you also tried setting CMAKE_GENERATOR to the empty string (set CMAKE_GENERATOR=)? If so, can you post that error message as well?

And my final question: have you been able to successfully install the precompiled binary wheel of TopoToolbox from PyPI using pip install topotoolbox?

BTW, checked a few posts online, and it seems that if you are installing using conda-forge, it doesn't need any compilers and avoids compiler issues on Windows. I have no idea if it's true or untrue, but it seems that topotoolbox is not on conda-forge yet.

I see you ran pip install compilers, which installs the PyPI compilers package, which I believe is different from the compilers package from conda-forge.

Does running conda install compilers, followed by the set CMAKE_GENERATOR= and then pip install . from the pytopotoolbox directory change anything?

BTW, checked a few posts online, and it seems that if you are installing using conda-forge, it doesn't need any compilers and avoids compiler issues on Windows. I have no idea if it's true or untrue, but it seems that topotoolbox is not on conda-forge yet.

This may be the best long-term solution to this issue. We can prioritize getting it on conda-forge.

@MayureshPadalkar, thanks for the updated error messages. I'll need to do some more experimentation to figure out exactly what's going wrong here. The last time we had to debug a conda installation on Windows, installing the compilers package, followed by setting the CMAKE_GENERATOR seemed to fix things, but perhaps we're missing a step or there is something different about your setup.

@wschwanghart, you have been using conda on Windows, right? Have you been able to install pytopotoolbox from source using pip install . from the pytopotoolbox directory rather than pip install topotoolbox?

@MayureshPadalkar: I realized that I misunderstood a little bit what you were doing. pip install topotoolbox should install TopoToolbox from PyPI. Normally this will install a precompiled binary wheel, but we had not been producing wheels for Python v3.13. When you ran pip install topotoolbox, it could not find a wheel for v3.13, so it downloaded the source and proceeded to try to build the binary, which resulted in your errors.

I just added (#235) v3.13 wheels to a new release of TopoToolbox (v0.0.4, #236) on PyPI. If you just want to use TopoToolbox, you should now be able to run pip install topotoolbox from your Anaconda prompt to install a precompiled wheel of TopoToolbox v0.0.4. Let me know if that solves your problem.

We still need to sort out the build errors that you received when building from source, but this build step should only be necessary if you want to develop the pytopotoolbox package. I will leave this issue open until we are able to figure this problem out.
