Situation: we ought to maintain connection with KSC.
Drawbacks:
Player gets extra problems when he launches first relay.
It is not real since in real world there are plenty of stations on Earth.
It is not real since all satellite missions are completely autopiloted (so in real world it is enough to have only one station to get to specific orbit). Making perfect autopiloting is a very complex task, so we can live without it, but, please, make default settings to able controlling unmanned probes from any point of LKO.
Advantages:
It adds more complexity (not really an advantage, since there is not only one celestial body in KSP)
I know you heard about this many times, however, I didn't find same issue on this tracker. I know I can tweak this mod, but my point is to make this as default settings, because it is realistic. Also I don't like to tweak anything, because this usually can cause problems I won't to solve.

Just copy paste the ground station from the default configuration file and edit the latitude and longitude. Make sure that the altitude matches that of the actual coordinates where you're putting the station.
Note: should be fixed in next Major release with RT (2.0) on top of CommNet (Stock KSP as many default ground stations). Difficulty setting should make the number of ground stations available at start adjustable.
