Community Prosthetic Fitting Initiative — Design Refinement Discussion

Hi engineers and contributors! 👋

We are coordinating a community prosthetic fitting initiative focused on improving open-source prosthetic designs for real-world community use. We'd like to convene a design refinement discussion with engineers, makers, and clinicians to align on:

Discussion Topics

  1. Parameterization & Personalization — How can CAD files and parametric models be improved to better accommodate diverse patient anatomy? (Reference: OpenBionics' anthropometric-based design approach)
  2. Material & Fabrication — Optimizing for off-the-shelf materials and 3D printing workflows; cost reduction targets
  3. Electrical & Actuation — Myoelectric control integration, servo motor selection, and battery life improvements
  4. Clinical Validation — How to bridge the gap between open-source prototyping and clinical trial evidence (see trends below)
  5. Accessibility & Usability — Simplifying assembly guides for community makers and non-engineer volunteers

Current Clinical Trial Landscape (from recent data)

  • Sponsor activity: VA healthcare systems and academic medical centers are actively sponsoring prosthetic-related studies, primarily at Phase NA (device/post-market studies)
  • Key focus areas: Limb-sparing surgery alignment, thermoregulation in prosthetic sockets, AI-driven prosthetic control
