Is it possible to have an en.js and a de.js file for English and German translations?

if that so, use vue-i18n instead

I'm not using vue. its vanilla js.

of course you can separate the locales

import xxxEn from 'en.js'
import xxxDe from 'de.js'

console.log(
  t(xxxDe.yyy, xxxEn.yyy)
)
