If only it would be that simple. It's doesn't work in IE. http://elv1s.ru/files/js/ie-input-type-bug.html

Even jQuery does not allow you to change type. http://github.com/jquery/jquery/blob/8effe3a7dee91c833cc1774646da9d743600c64c/src/attributes.js#L284

One possible workaround is to create additional <input type=text> field. I'm not sure it's a bulletproof solution. It needs more testing.
