Nice paper by Bugmann and Seidel assessing complexity and diversity across processes in models of forest dynamics. FATES is in the mix! https://besjournals.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/1365-2745.13989
Interesting analysis for stand, landscape & global models used to assess impact of climate on forests. Authors find that complexity is not balanced across processes (growth, mortality & regeneration), and global models specifically have overall lower complexity for mortality and regeneration. Within multi-model assessments diversity across the models is desired, and consensus across diverse models suggests higher confidence in the results. Given the limitations found, the authors welcome the increased focus within the global modeling community on demography.
