FRP detection time and day meaning in the FINN

Dear FINN Developer Team,

I have two questions regarding the FINN data:

• What is the FRP detection time in the FINN dataset? I would like to interpolate FRP values to generate a diurnal plume height profile using hourly FRP. The detection time could be critical for the interpolation. Since FINN uses both MODIS and VIIRS, which have different overpass times, I’m wondering what would be a good way to estimate detection time. Additionally, does the product include nighttime FRP detections in its reported values?

• Are the daily total emissions reported in FINN based on local day or UTC day?

The FRP value reported in the FINN emissions files are an average over all the satellites used, so do not correspond to a specific time (MODIS from Terra and Aqua satellites are combined).
FINN emissions should just be considered to represent a daily average and cannot be used to derive diurnal variations.

Emissions (in the files posted on the NCAR RDA) are for each day based on UTC time. There is the option in the FINN code to process emissions for local day, but we did not use that in the emissions provided on the archive.

Thanks for your clarification! It would be great if you could add such information in the data README since your latest publication mentioned FINNv2.5 is based on local time.

Is there any place to download the local day emission since the temporal profile of fire could be more related to local time? Local emission products could be easier for doing temporal allocation.

All emissions that NCAR makes publicly available are calculated for each day based on 00-24 UTC.
