Hi All,

Thanks for a great first session today. We introduced a lot of concepts and tooling and you are starting with a lot of good questions; we are excited to explore them more together in the next sessions. Below is a light digest of Call 01, including a reminder about your Seaside Chat and the Pathway Sheet introduced in the Mindset slides.

We've sent each of you an invitation to Openscapes Slack. The private `2022-nasa-champions` channel is the best way to connect with NASA-Openscapes Mentors - your questions benefit the whole group so please ask! The public channels are a nice way to engage with the wider Openscapes Community including colleagues from previous cohorts - please introduce yourselves in the welcome channel. Joining Slack is optional, another tool for you to experiment with.

We sent calendar invites to an optional co-working time in weeks alternating with our Cohort Calls. We'll set up additional times based on need and let folks know in Slack; you're always welcome to join any co-working session: talking, screensharing, and seeing how other people work is a big part of this transition to the cloud.

Have a good weekend,

Julie, Erin, NASA-Openscapes Mentors

Digest: Cohort Call 01 [ 2022-nasa-champions ]

Cohort Folder - contains agendas, video recordings, pathways folder

nasa-openscapes.github.io/2022-nasa-champions - cohort webpage with team information

Goals: We started working towards a common understanding of the Openscapes mindset and what your pathway forward looks like for your team.

Task; please see the Agenda for more details

  1. Have a Seaside Chat & start your Pathway

  2. Create GitHub usernames

Slide Decks:

Openscapes mindset (slides)

Evapotranspiration in the Cloud - Stefanie Kagone (Slides are in our Cohort Folder)

Introducing cloud workflows (slides) by Catalina Oaida for the 2021 Cloud Hackathon

A few lines from shared notes in the Agenda doc:

What are you already doing that aligns with the Openscapes Mindset?

  • Already doing: transitioning to python, working with NASA cloud holdings (though downloading them locally), using github (though just by myself)..... Trying to make my code & data available to all to enhance equity and inclusivity.

  • The work I am doing I feel really resonates with the statement made about the new era of science communication.

  • National Institutes of Health (NIH) will be moving to (mandating) much more open science in terms of data sharing -- thinking about how biomedical science can learn from the open Earth science community

  • Creating more consistent datasets and transitioning from Matlab to Python

  •  I have started trying to make code more usable/reproducible but it will really help to learn more about how to share code between my group and with others in a more efficient/correct way. Giving people a good starting point helps lower the bar for getting into science and for advancing science.

  • Training and mentoring many first-generation and/or under-represented minority students
