Hi Phonieboxers,

please add your latest designs of finished Phonieboxes in this thread (Everyone builds an original!). Some of these will make it into the new calendar 2022 coming out shortly before Christmas. See last years calendars here by clicking on 2021, 2020 and 2019 - which was the first calendar I did.

If you uploaded your designs already to the latest thread (Pictures of Phonieboxes for inspiration 2020/2021), you don't need to upload them again - I will be looking through this fountain of insipration as well :)

Built a couple of speakers with Tonuino and one Phoniebox a few weeks before the pandemic started in Winter 2019/2020. More documentation in Episode 137 of my makers radio show / podcast "Netzbasteln" at Deutschlanfunk Nova.

After a few early attempts using wood or a small suitcase, I ended up using the old cassette recorder that was not intact anymore. I was lucky that all the equipment I had bought before would still fit into the small case. The components are rather standard as I wanted it work without much technical difficulties. But, it's already running on Version 3 😉.

My components are:

• Raspberry Pi 3 B+
• USB RFID Card Reader EM4100
• Stereo Speakers (6 Watt, 3,5mm, USB Power supply)
• USB Sound Card (for out and in)
• Audio Noise Filter
• Power Bank USB 10000mAh
• GPIO Arcade Buttons

Luckily I found a battery with the right form-factor to be put into the old battery slot where 4 LR20 batteries were placed before. I had to disassemble the Card Reader and placed in the old cassette storage (I cannot be opened anymore). The original buttons were physical buttons before moving actual parts in the old cassette recorder. Since all this inner stuff is gone, I had to find a new way to fix the buttons on top of arcade buttons (I only used the actual button). Some old LEGO bricks did the trick. Unfortunately, I didn't have much room to place the speakers better. But the sound turned out to be alright. As soon V3 supports recording with a microphone, I will add them back as well.

Hi all
We are three engineers (mechanical, timber, electrical) and built three Phonieboxes by using a CAD model to prepare the tooling, a 5-axes CNC milling machine for the nice outerior, a laser cutter (wood for internal "dirty" work and plexiglass for the front details) with only minor soldering. We also turned (german: drehen) an aluminium piece (the nose) and anodized them (eloxieren). The ears (that hide forward/backward buttons) and tail as well as the handle are leather.

A more practical approach with drawers to store all the cards :-)
Bought the "housing" at Woolworth for 5€.
Currently the box is wired, but i am thinking about sacrificing another drawer for a powerbank.

Die SD Card enthält nun zwei Partitionen/Laufwerke, das erste Laufwerk ist unter alle Betriebssystemen lesbar. In diesem Laufwerk (/boot) müssen jetzt noch zwei Dateien erzeugt werden:
• eine leere Datei mit dem Namen ssh um den (headless) Zugriff per ssh zu ermöglichen (Achtung Dateiendung entfernen).
Hinweis: Eine spätere Aktivierung von SSH ist mit sudo raspi-config (Punkt 5 "Interfacing Options", dann Punkt 2 SSH) möglich, erfordert dann aber Tastatur und Monitor am RPi.
• eine Textdatei im Linux Format mit Namen wpa_supplicant.conf und folgendem Inhalt wenn der Pi sofort mit wlan starten soll (hier ebenfalls die txt endung enfernen und als .conf Datei mit dem Notepad++ abspeichern).

I have used a wooden cigar box as base with 3 Sanwa Arcade Buttons to control media playback. On top is a adafruit rugged metal push button with integrated status led to shutdown the pi zero.

Thank you so much for this super cool project! I am not a developper myself and I was a bit worried I would have to modify some code, but in fact installation was smooth and easy. I sticked to the recommended hardware and it worked flawlessly. My kids are still very young (1.5y and 3y) so I made a very basic version, but they could not be happier :)

I call it the "Miniphonie" or "Travelphonie".
Using a Rasperry Pi Zero 2, Pisugar3 Battery Hat and the Pirate Audio Headphone Amp.
I'm not done yet: For start I will cue the music via WebApp for my son. I'm still in the search of a small enough RFID Reader and Antenna. Additionally I still need to design a flexible TPE Enclosure to 3D print, so that the MiniPhonie is save for Travel.

As a Swiss we use standard swiss army knife for pocket size comparison ;-)

thanks @Lippsson. I discovered it "by accident" so I thought I'll give it a go - as my son loves his PhonieBox - but its just to big to travel. we had to rely on a iPad and Headphones.

I started with some basic combination of PirateAudio STLs and the PiSugar STLs above.... see attached Zip with a miniphonie.stl - but it is a first in 3D Modelling / Printing for me - so yes i would appreciate the help!

I decided against Bluetooth because I think you will always have some connectivity issues and the overall UX will be better with wired headphones - at least for small children.

I've finished the headphone upgrade:

• Since the Hifiberry Miniamp is not compatible with headphones, I replaced it by a IQaudio DAC+. Fortunately, it has already an integrated headphone preamp. However, I'm not using the integrated headphone socket, since the Raspberry Pi is mounted in the center of the box.
• Since the IQaudio DAC+ has no integrated preamp for the speakers, I'm using a Max98306 Stereo 3.7W Class D Audio Amplifier. It can be muted by pulling the shutdown pin to GND.
• As headphone socket, I'm using the TonUINO Kopfhörerplatine. It is slightly more expensive compared to other sockets, but for me it was difficult to find something which creates a contact (to GND) when a plug is inserted (and not vice versa). I'm using that to shutdown the MAX98306 when the plug is inserted.
• The headphone signal is available on pins on the IQaudio DAC+. However, a signal is only available if you have a plug inserted into the internal/onboard headphone socket. I solved that by just plugging in an old headphone plug, which I didn't use anymore.
• The level of the headphone amp is quite high. I had to reduce the max. volume of the Phoniebox software to 40%. In order have similar loudness between headphones and external speakers, I had to increase the gain of the MAX98306. However, I did not like this solution (for example you could then hear a loud artefact when the Phoniebox was switched on). Therefore, I again reduced the gain of the MAX98306 and instead built a small resistor attenuation network for the headphone signal.
