Using big letters after '&' causes formatting to not appear

^ same as title says
For example doing &f&L makes it not apply bold formatting and displays &L. Meanwhile, any other formating in any plugin, as well as bukkit API, allows it without any problem.
This makes issues when players are allowed to change colors & formats of their nicknames on my server.

Lowercase &l should work no?

This plugin uses LegacyComponentSerializer which is built-in with paper, so im surprised this does not work

Well, it works wrongly then. Literally any other plugin, chat or permission plugin allow it without any issue :(
When players use essentialsX /nick command for that, it displays correctly everywhere but not in your plugin

My quick suggested fix is to apply formating with bukkit API if classes you are using do it wrongly and then serialize it

Ensure your formatter is set to smart or legacy, default is MiniMessage IIRC
