Background
Currently, shorts are treated just like normal videos on all surfaces. This has at least two problems
- Shorts are short, they are meant to be consumed in sequence with little effort, but our current player treats them as a long form video, and it does not show you one short after another, let alone on the same topic or theme.
- Shorts are displayed with same aspect ratio as normal video when previewed, which looks horrible.
Proposal
Properly treat shorts as a distinct media format in Atlas. A design review of the product needs to be done, below I have just sketched out my immediate thoughts, do not feel confined by those conclusions.
Home feed
Shorts are shown in their own shorts carousel.
Player
- Shorts are not played in the normal player, a new shorts player experience is constructed, where on desktop one can navigate to next or prior video with minimal effort.
- The normal video players does not recommend shorts in the sidebar, and does not recommend them as the next video
- To make things simple, lets just play a random next short from the same creator, if no other shorts exist just pick a random other short from same category. Ideally Recombee can allow us to do this properly, depending on when it is deployed.
Channel
- The channel viewer page separates shorts into its own tab, with suitable aspect ratio for previews
Search
- Search experience returns a distinct carousel of shorts.
Marketplace
- Shorts are separated from normal videos.
- We probably need a distinct visual presentation of shorts when there is an NFT associated with it.
Studio
Videos
Same as channel view, separate shorts in its own tab.
Publisher
Here the publisher should detect whether the video is suitable for long form, or alternatively ask the user whether they are publishing long or short form. The preview image for example has to clearly match the aspect ratio of a short form. There may be other forms of metadata we should ask from the user as well, compared to normal video.
