Change the font and showcase view

Hi,
I am a complete newbie, trying to build my first group webpage beyond google sites. I am using Research Group template. I am stuck with two things.

1. I want to change the font. Roboto-Light and normal for all text. You have mentioned that we have to build a custom css under assets. But, is it possible to provide an example?
2. I am adding a new section. I am trying to have the view "showcase", but while compact/card view is working, showcase is giving error (I am playing with changing the view of post section).

Can you kindly help me with these?
