Publication with external link

I would like to change the behavior of the publication link: instead of going to a new page within my website I would like to go directly to some external page. The publication index.md should look like the following:

title: 'My paper'
authors:

• admin
  date:
  publication_types: ['0']
  publication:
  publication_short:

external_link: example.org

A similar work is done here by @catrincm but I am not sure which file does the page redirection (similar to page_metadata_authors) to try and modify.

Any ideas?
