[[PROPOSAL]] Adopt "OpenSpec" (by Codder13) as the official VS Code Extension
#1538
Moved from issue #309, originally opened by @Codder13 on 2025-11-14. Continuing the conversation here in Discussions — the original issue thread (including any comments) stays available at #309 for the record.
Hello OpenSpec Maintainers and Community,
I've been working with the OpenSpec methodology and, to make the workflow easier for myself and others, I've developed a VS Code extension.
As of now, this appears to be the only extension on the VS Code Marketplace that provides specific tooling for OpenSpec.
What it Does
The extension is designed to help developers execute tasks with the full context required by the methodology. It adds a "Start task" CodeLens to tasks.md files.
When clicked, it automatically loads the AI assistant's chat (like GitHub Copilot) with the complete context for that task, including:
OpenSpec methodology (AGENTS.md)
Project conventions (project.md)
Change proposal (proposal.md)
Technical design (design.md)
All spec deltas for the change
The specific task to implement
This ensures the AI or developer has all the information to execute the task surgically and correctly.
The Proposal
I'm opening this issue to propose that this extension be adopted or recognized as the official VS Code extension for OpenSpec.
Having an "official" extension would:
Give users a clear, trusted, and easy-to-find tool.
Ensure a consistent, well-maintained experience for the community.
Allow for closer integration as the OpenSpec methodology evolves.
I am completely open to discussing what "official" means, whether that's:
Transferring the repository to the main OpenSpec GitHub organization.
Adding the core maintainers as owners/collaborators.
Simply getting a "seal of approval" and a link in the main project's README.
My goal is to support the community, and I'm happy to collaborate in whatever way works best for the project.
I'd love to get feedback on the extension itself and on this proposal!
