Adds a Comfy-Usage-Source: comfy-cli header to all requests made by the CLI to Comfy-owned APIs (local ComfyUI, cloud ComfyUI, builder, deploy, registry, sign-in, and code search). This allows servers to distinguish CLI-originated traffic from web UI traffic for analytics and debugging purposes.

Key Changes

  • New constant: Introduced USAGE_SOURCE_HEADERS in comfy_cli/http.py containing the standardized attribution header
  • HTTP layer: Updated build_authed_request() and request_json() to automatically include the header on all requests
  • Direct urllib usage: Added the header to all direct urllib.request.Request calls throughout the codebase:
    • Job management (comfy_cli/command/jobs.py)
    • Execution/queuing (comfy_cli/command/run/execution.py)
    • File transfer (comfy_cli/command/transfer.py)
    • Preflight checks (comfy_cli/command/run/preflight.py)
    • Cloud OAuth (comfy_cli/cloud/oauth.py)
    • Cloud HTTP (comfy_cli/command/cloud_http.py)
    • CQL engine (comfy_cli/cql/engine.py)
    • Deploy assets (comfy_cli/deploy_assets.py)
  • requests library usage: Added the header to all requests.get() and requests.post() calls:
    • Build version detection (comfy_cli/command/build.py)
    • Code search (comfy_cli/command/code_search.py)
    • Registry API (comfy_cli/registry/api.py)
    • Server health checks (comfy_cli/env_checker.py, comfy_cli/command/job_watcher.py)
    • Generate app (comfy_cli/command/generate/app.py, comfy_cli/command/generate/client.py)
  • Client layer: Updated comfy_cli/comfy_client.py to use the constant instead of hardcoded header
  • Tests: Added comprehensive test coverage verifying the header is present on both authenticated and unauthenticated requests, and that it coexists with caller-provided headers

Implementation Details

The header is applied consistently across three request patterns:

  1. High-level functions (build_authed_request, request_json) automatically inject it
  2. Direct urllib.request.Request instantiation includes it via the headers parameter
  3. requests library calls pass it explicitly in the headers parameter

The implementation ensures the header is never duplicated and doesn't interfere with caller-provided headers (caller headers take precedence in case of conflicts).

https://claude.ai/code/session_01Avq8v94zyd3ByKitASZ92K

The header was only attached to the ComfyUI/cloud client, `comfy run`'s
/prompt submit and `comfy generate`. Builder, deploy, registry, OAuth,
jobs, transfer, cloud_http and the local liveness probes sent nothing, so
that traffic was indistinguishable from other clients server-side.

Define USAGE_SOURCE_HEADERS once in comfy_cli/http.py and attach it in the
shared request_json / build_authed_request helpers (covering every builder
and deploy call) plus each remaining direct call site to a Comfy-owned
host. Third-party hosts (GitHub, PyPI, model hosts, pre-signed storage
URLs, telemetry) are deliberately left without it.

Strip Comfy-Usage-Source on download redirects.

_stream_http_one adds Comfy-Usage-Source to the request. _DownloadRedirectHandler does not remove it because _AUTH_HEADERS_TO_STRIP lacks comfy-usage-source. The header can therefore reach the signed storage URL.

The one red check, Run Tests on GPU Runners (linux), isn't caused by this PR. It also fails on main, for example run 35813814168 on 3ef43fb, and it fails the same way on every recent main push and PR.

The same two e2e tests fail each time: tests/e2e/test_e2e_uv_compile.py::test_progressive_conflict and ::test_node_uv_sync_standalone_conflict. The failure happens inside ComfyUI-Manager's cm_cli uv-sync. Its resolver rejects git+https://github.com/facebookresearch/sam2 from comfyui-impact-pack (rejected path separator), so the tests never get the Conflicting packages (by node pack): output they check for. That path doesn't touch any HTTP headers. I didn't find an open PR that fixes it yet.

All other checks pass on this head, including unit tests on Linux, macOS and Windows, ruff, and CodeQL.

Scheduled PR check: lint (ruff), CodeQL, Socket and the tests on Linux, macOS and Windows all pass. One check is red: Run Tests on GPU Runners (linux). I did not change anything.

  • Failing tests: two e2e tests in tests/e2e/test_e2e_uv_compile.py (test_progressive_conflict and test_node_uv_sync_standalone_conflict). They assert that the output contains Conflicting packages (by node pack): and got a different resolver error instead.
  • Likely cause: the failure comes from the ComfyUI-Manager uv-sync output and an external test node pack. It does not touch the Comfy-Usage-Source header this PR adds, so I think it is unrelated.
  • Not confirmed: I haven't seen the same failure on main. Please re-run once or compare against main. No code change is needed from this PR.

Prevent attribution-header forwarding across third-party redirects. Both request paths add Comfy-Usage-Source and use clients that follow redirects. A cross-host redirect can therefore send the header to a host outside the scope documented in comfy_cli/http.py.

Merge conflicts with main are resolved. Merged origin/main into this branch. The only conflicts were in comfy_cli/command/code_search.py and its test: I kept main's new streaming/size-capped fetch and added Comfy-Usage-Source to its headers alongside Accept-Encoding: identity.

Local check: ruff lint and format pass, and pytest passes except 2 tests (test_node_deps::test_non_pep440_installed_version_is_unknown_not_a_crash, test_http::test_an_unloadable_supplement_falls_through_to_the_platform_roots) that also fail on a clean origin/main in my sandbox.

Merge conflicts with main resolved (25b00b4). The only conflict was in comfy_cli/command/code_search.py: kept both the Comfy-Usage-Source header and main's new X-Comfy-Code-Search-Origin agent header, and updated the new agent-origin test's expected headers to include Comfy-Usage-Source. Ruff lint passes; the remaining local code_search test failures also occur on main (agent-environment detection).

Keep Comfy-Usage-Source off cross-origin redirects.

plain_urlopen follows redirects, and urllib.request.HTTPRedirectHandler copies Comfy-Usage-Source into redirected requests. A redirect from /object_info to a third-party host can therefore send the Comfy-only attribution header there.

Requests 2.33.0 also follows redirects by default and preserves custom headers across hosts. Apply a no-redirect policy or remove the header before following a cross-origin redirect at these sites:

LGTM. Header centralized in USAGE_SOURCE_HEADERS, same static value, shared dict never mutated. No blocking issues.

Resolve conflict in run/execution.py: keep main's borrowed-client-id handling and send the shared USAGE_SOURCE_HEADERS.

Restrict usage attribution to Comfy-owned origins.

request_json adds Comfy-Usage-Source: comfy-cli after only an HTTPS check. A user can set COMFY_BUILDER_URL, COMFY_CLOUD_BASE_URL, cloud_base_url, or COMFY_DEPLOY_URL to an HTTPS third-party origin. The builder, cloud billing, and deploy clients then call request_json with that origin, so the third-party server receives the CLI attribution header. This violates the module contract and discloses that the user is using the Comfy CLI to that host.

Gate the header merge on a shared Comfy-owned-origin check, or reject non-Comfy override origins before constructing these clients. Preserve documented Comfy-owned overrides such as staging and PR-preview hosts. Keep the header on the Comfy side of the line.

Strip Comfy-Usage-Source on download redirects.

auth_hdrs now includes Comfy-Usage-Source. _stream_http_one adds every entry to the Request. _DownloadRedirectHandler strips only the names in _AUTH_HEADERS_TO_STRIP. That set lacks comfy-usage-source. The header reaches the pre-signed storage URL after a redirect. The comment on USAGE_SOURCE_HEADERS says that must never happen. Add the name to the set at Line 75.

Automated PR review (scheduled check-in):

CI: green.

Safe to fix (small, in scope): add comfy-usage-source to _AUTH_HEADERS_TO_STRIP in comfy_cli/command/transfer.py so the header is not forwarded to signed storage URLs on download redirects (open CodeRabbit thread).

Needs a check-in: the other open thread asks that Comfy-Usage-Source not follow cross-host redirects in generate/app.py and jobs.py. That means restricting the header to Comfy-owned hosts or disabling redirects, which changes request behavior. Which approach do you prefer?
