Repository navigation
fix(registry): let comfy node init scaffold without a git remote - #1021
Conversation
`initialize_project_config` read `project.name`, `DisplayName` and the three
`[project.urls]` entries from the git `origin` remote and raised on any failure.
A first publication is often made from a plain folder with no repository, or
from one with no remote yet, and that path was unusable — and then permanently
stuck:
* `create_comfynode_config()` has already written `pyproject.toml` by the time
the lookup runs, so the raise leaves a half-initialized project behind, and
* the `init` command refuses to overwrite an existing `pyproject.toml`
("Will not overwrite", exit 1), so re-running after `git init` fails too.
Measured in both shapes: no repository (git exits 128) and a repository with no
`origin` (git exits 2).
Treat "git answered, there is no repository or no `origin`" as non-fatal: warn,
leave `[project.urls].Repository` as the scaffold's empty value rather than
inventing URLs, and name the pack after the containing folder. `URLs` already
defaults every field to "", and `publish_node_version` client-validates only
`PublisherId` and `project.name`, so an absent repository URL is an already
supported shape.
A git that is absent or *refused* stays fatal. `BinaryNotFoundError` subclasses
`OSError`, and "we cannot trust git here" calls for different remediation than
"you have no remote yet"; narrowing the catch keeps the two distinguishable.

… fallback Implements the eight unresolved cursor-review findings on #1021, all against `comfy_cli/registry/config_parser.py`. The git-resolution changes come first because they decide what reaches the folder-name path the rest depend on. **A git that cannot answer is no longer read as "you have no remote yet."** (#1021 (comment), #1021 (comment)) Every `CalledProcessError` landed in the no-origin branch with stderr sent to `DEVNULL`, so a repository-ownership refusal (`detected dubious ownership`, common in containers and CI), a corrupt `.git/config`, or a permission error all reported a missing origin and then wrote folder-derived metadata over a real repository's identity — with git's diagnostic discarded. Measured: those exit 128, the same code as "not a git repository", so the exit code alone cannot separate them and stderr has to be read. `_resolve_origin_url()` now falls back for exactly three cases and propagates everything else, stderr intact: no repository (git's own `not a git repository`), a repository not rooted here, and `get-url` exit 2, git's documented signal that the remote config key is absent. The stderr match is an allowlist, so an unrecognised git diagnostic fails loudly rather than silently scaffolding the wrong metadata. `_run_git` forces `LC_ALL=C` and clears `LANGUAGE`, because that match is against a gettext-localized message and Git for Windows ships the translations — without it a non-English user's "not a git repository" misses the allowlist and the intended fallback becomes a hard error. **A nested pack no longer inherits its parent repository's origin.** (#1021 (comment)) `git remote get-url origin` searches parent directories, so the usual new-pack layout — a plain folder under `ComfyUI/custom_nodes/` inside a cloned ComfyUI — never reached the no-remote fallback at all. It answered with ComfyUI's origin, scaffolding a publishable pack whose Repository, Documentation and Bug Tracker pointed at `comfyanonymous/ComfyUI`. `rev-parse --show-toplevel` must now match the cwd before any remote is trusted. This also makes the fallback tests independent of whether `tmp_path` happens to sit inside a checkout. **Nothing is written until git has answered.** (#1021 (comment)) The `OSError`/`BinaryNotFoundError` branch raised *after* `create_comfynode_config()` had already written a `name = ""` stub, and `comfy node init` then refuses to overwrite it — the half-initialized, cannot-retry state this PR exists to remove. Git is resolved before the first write, so a refusal aborts with nothing on disk and re-running works once the cause is fixed. **The folder-name fallback is normalized.** (#1021 (comment), #1021 (comment)) `sanitize_node_name` only lowercases and strips prefixes, so `My First Pack`, `Pack (copy)` and non-ASCII names produced an invalid PEP 508 `[project].name`, while `ComfyUI-`, `comfy` and the filesystem root produced an empty one — and `init` reported success either way, with the problem surfacing much later at build or publish. `normalize_project_name()` collapses runs of disallowed characters to `-` and trims to an alphanumeric at each end, falling back to `my-custom-nodes` with a warning when nothing survives. `DisplayName` keeps the original text, which is free-form. **`.replace(".git", "")` → `.removesuffix(".git")`.** (#1021 (comment)) `replace` strips every occurrence, so `https://my.gitea.host/u/my.github.io.git` came out as a different host. Pre-existing, but these lines are rewritten here. **The re-run test no longer claims retry-ability the command lacks.** (#1021 (comment)) Its second call went through `initialize_project_config()` and so bypassed `scaffold()`'s "already exists" guard. Renamed to say what it proves — the library function is callable twice — and `test_node_init_refuses_to_overwrite_an_existing_pyproject` now pins the real command's behaviour through the CLI entry point. The retry feature itself is deliberately not added. **The warning is a recommendation, not a requirement.** (#1021 (comment)) It told users to set `Repository` "before publishing" while the comment above it says `[project.urls]` is optional for the Registry route. 24 new test cases. 19 of them, plus the 2 reworded warning assertions, were verified red against this PR's own parent (`6dc66c3`) and are green here; the other 5 pin behaviour that was already correct. 137 pass in `tests/comfy_cli/registry/`, and `ruff check` / `ruff format --diff` are clean on 0.15.15, the version CI pins. Verified on Python 3.10, the CI target. The two tests that need a git which fails a specific way monkeypatch `_run_git` rather than planting a `git` on `$PATH`: an extensionless shebang script is invisible to `shutil.which` on Windows, so a planted-binary test would fall through to the real git on `windows-latest` and assert the wrong thing. `test_initialize_project_config_propagates_corrupt_git_config` covers the real spawn path end to end on every platform.

Two things worth a closer look, because they go past a literal reading of the findings. The nested-repository guard also declines the monorepo shape. A pack at Forcing the C locale is new and came out of the first fix rather than from a finding. Selecting the no-repository fallback now depends on matching Nineteen of the twenty-four new test cases, plus the two reworded warning assertions, fail against 6dc66c3 and pass here, so every finding has a case that was red before the fix. …nd locale encoding Two review findings on the git resolution added in 99cbc0a, both of which defeat the rooted-here guard rather than sitting beside it. `_run_git` copied all of `os.environ`. `GIT_DIR` without `GIT_WORK_TREE` — exactly how git invokes a hook, so how pre-commit invokes anything — makes git treat the CURRENT directory as the top of the work tree. So `rev-parse --show-toplevel` answers with the pack folder, the rooted-here check passes, and `remote get-url origin` returns the origin of the repository `GIT_DIR` points at: the same somebody-else's-URLs scaffold that check exists to prevent, by another route. Measured against git 2.43.0 — with `GIT_DIR` set in a plain folder under a repository, `--show-toplevel` prints the folder and `get-url` prints the parent's origin. The repository-location and discovery variables are now dropped from the child environment; the locale overrides are unchanged. `text=True` with no `encoding` decoded git's output with the parent's locale encoding, while git writes paths and config values as UTF-8. On a non-UTF-8 parent that is either a wrong-side decode — the repository-root comparison fails and valid URLs are silently dropped — or an unmapped byte, which raises `UnicodeDecodeError` out of `subprocess.run` and crashes `comfy node init` before it writes anything. Decode as UTF-8 explicitly, with `errors="replace"` so an undecodable diagnostic degrades to a readable message instead of a traceback. Four cases, all red on 99cbc0a and green here: * `..._ignores_an_inherited_git_dir` — the leak end to end; on the parent head `Repository` comes out as `https://github.com/comfyanonymous/ComfyUI`. * `test_run_git_strips_inherited_git_location_variables` — the child environment pinned directly, including the encoding arguments. * `test_run_git_tolerates_undecodable_git_output` — `UnicodeDecodeError` out of `subprocess.run` on the parent head. * `..._decodes_git_output_as_utf8_under_a_non_utf8_locale` — a non-UTF-8 locale cannot be simulated in-process (on Python 3.10 the default is resolved in C, with no `locale` attribute consulted), so this one runs the lookup in a child interpreter with the C locale forced and skips if that interpreter still comes up UTF-8. Red on the parent head with `'ascii' codec can't decode byte 0xc3`. An autouse fixture also removes those variables for the whole test module, so the no-repository and parent-origin assertions cannot be answered about the caller's checkout when pytest itself runs under a hook. Follow-up to the review finding that `_run_git` should also drop `GIT_CONFIG_COUNT` and its `GIT_CONFIG_KEY_<n>` / `GIT_CONFIG_VALUE_<n>` pairs, so an injected `remote.origin.url` cannot displace the folder fallback. The scenario does not reproduce. Measured on git 2.43.0, in a repository with no `origin`: ``` $ GIT_CONFIG_COUNT=1 GIT_CONFIG_KEY_0=remote.origin.url \ GIT_CONFIG_VALUE_0=https://github.com/someoneelse/Other.git git config --get remote.origin.url https://github.com/someoneelse/Other.git $ ... git remote -v origin https://github.com/someoneelse/Other.git (fetch) ... $ ... git remote get-url origin error: No such remote 'origin' # exit 2 -> the folder fallback ``` `git remote get-url` calls `remote_is_configured(remote, 1)`, so it requires the remote to be configured in the repository. The injection is live for `config --get` and `remote -v` and still cannot satisfy `get-url`. Stripping those variables is also not free. Command-scope config is *protected* configuration in git's own terms, which is why granting `safe.directory` through it is the standard container recipe. Dropping it would turn an ownership refusal back into the hard error this branch makes fatal, for exactly the users who rely on that recipe. So the behaviour is pinned rather than changed: `test_initialize_project_config_ignores_an_env_injected_origin_url` asserts the injection is in force for the spawned git and that the scaffold still takes the folder fallback with no trace of the injected host. This is a regression guard, not a red-on-parent proof: it passes on 99cbc0a too. If a later git lets command-scope config satisfy `get-url`, it goes red and the decision gets revisited instead of rediscovered. Also corrects the comment that claimed nothing in this environment is a config override, and rewraps one docstring line. Addresses #1021 (comment)
