Reformatting the coordinates and subset the data retaining only storms records from 1900. Scientists consider the HURDAT2 record to be accurate for landfall statistics from 1900 onward as the population density from 1900 onward along the U.S. coastline was sufficient to ensure all tropical storms were recorded (Landsea, 2007).
