When there are no questions in the queue, tutors have to constantly monitor the queue for new questions. Human nature being what it is, they (including me) start chatting to other tutors, check their phones, etc. It's thus possible to miss a new question for a minute or two when it comes in.
When a new question comes it, it could flash a few times. This would mean that a tutor is likely to notice it out of the corner of their eye, even if they aren't 100% focused on the queue.
An alternative would be to play a sound when a new question comes in. However, this could be disruptive, especially if there are multiple questions already in the queue, and all the tutors are out answering questions already.
