More granular list of research domains #540
Description
We have gotten requests for more options for research domains, more granularity, and newer fields (e.g. AI) that aren't listed in our current list. We should consider new options, ideally an authoritative API, to use to generate our list of Research Domains.
Options to explore:
- Expanding to a 3rd level of hierarchy for subdomain from the original category to offer more optional granularity:
- Using OpenAlex's Domain and Field (and Subfield?) lists
- Finding a list that looks comprehensive we can scrape like this one
- JSTOR's subject list, which looks like its in an API but might not be better than current list
- Other options we find while exploring.
We would need to map any new list to our existing list to migrate data to the new tool.
