Please check that you have activated the API in FreshRSS options, and ensure that you are using your API password, which might be different from your normal FreshRSS password.
I have exactly the same problem. The only thing I changed was an Update from LOS16 2019-06-15 to 2019-07-20.
On the server nothing was changed. I can login via the Webbrowser and also with EasyRSS with the initial login. Only sync is not possible with this error.
