Question: How does an IS-08 device inform a controller that its audio mapping has changed?

The spec outlines this paragraph on version updates being the mechanism:

So one would assume that

Device version number SHOULD increment if the map has been modified.

However this contradicts the paragraph above, where it specifically says "any changes to active map parameters belonging to source connected outputs". So then does this or does it not apply to outputs which are not connected to an IS-04 source? In that case, how would a controller know the map has changed?

I read it the same as you, seems like Device version should be incremented but the paragraph above gives me some doubt. @AMWA-TV/nmos-architecture-review

Whenever the map changes (for any reason) the Device version number should be updated. This is because the Device resource was deemed the "owner" of the map.
If the map modifies outputs which contribute to Sources, then these sources should also update their version number. This is because outputs contributing to that particular Source will have an effect on the Source and this offers a way for clients which were only interested in that particular Source to know that something has changed (this may also be accompanied by the other changes to the Source resource as a consequence of this re-map - e.g. number of channels is modified).
